Someone asked me why I’m focused on women-owned companies. Well, the fact is, they need our help.
Women start businesses at much high rates than men, in fact, 1.5 times more than men do and for women of color, the rate is even higher. And, yet, women-owned businesses only got less than five percent of all venture capital funding in 2016.
Let that sink in a moment. Less than FIVE percent.
Women own more companies, but they have less investors. While the reasons for this are complex, the fact remains that more than 93% of venture capitalist firms are run by men. And even when women do get funding, they get less. Men, on average, start out with sixteen times MORE capital than women do for their businesses. SIXTEEN TIMES more.
That, my friends, is the definition of an UNEVEN playing field. When we launch our own businesses, we're not just making eighty cents for every dollar a man makes, we could be making less than six cents for every dollar a man makes.
That’s why I want to do my part to support persister entrepreneurs, and want to help you do the same. Check out our Partners page to see some of the real life, kick-butt women you support with every purchase of a She Persisted Box. If the venture capitalists won't fund us, let's fund ourselves, shall we?
